Robust species of medium size with an exten¬ded central caudal lobe. Colour pattern is variable according to the population. Dorsal fin rays 8–11, anal fin 14–16 rays, D/A=10-12. Scales in longitudinal series 27–31.
Maximum size: male 60 mm TL, female 50 mm TL.
Coloration: males, grey-brown with a light blue to green iridescence, of variable intensity, on the sides. Five longitudinal rows of dark red spots, that may be inter¬rup¬ted in places. Lowermost row usually parallel to lower profile and terminates at caudal fin base. In some populations this lower row may be replaced by a few irregularly distributed spots. Dorsal fin yellow-grey to brown with pale blue sheen and some dark red spots. Anal fin pale grey-brown to yellow-brown and may have a yellow-grey margin and numerous dark red spots. Caudal fin similar to anal fin. Females, dark grey to grey-brown with a pattern of spots on the sides similar to males. Unpaired fins colourless except for some dark grey spots near the base.
